Rescue operations have concluded at the Pentagon in Kamayama, where a three-storey building collapsed on Sunday afternoon. Four individuals were able to escape, but unfortunately, two people lost their lives and their bodies were recovered from the debris. Witnesses at the scene stated that the collapse was due to poor construction practices, with the contractor being held responsible.
Our Eyewitness News team investigated to identify the contractor involved in the incident. Mustapha Bunduka, who was among the workers inside the building at the time of the collapse, was described by his close family members, Alim Bangura and Mabinty Conteh, as an experienced contractor with over two decades of experience in the construction industry. They highlighted his successful track record of constructing various buildings that still stand today.
One of Bunduka’s notable projects is a two-storey building at Lambe Drive, Malama Main Junction, Lumley, along Regent Road in Freetown. This building has served multiple purposes, including housing hairdressing and cosmetics businesses, as well as providing residential accommodations.
Described as a dedicated family man, Bunduka resided with his family on Thompson Drive in the Malama community. Despite the recent loss of one of his daughters, he was known to have completed three previous house projects without any structural or professional issues. Mabinty Conteh confirmed that the Lambe Drive building was one of Bunduka’s major undertakings, showcasing his commitment to safe and dependable construction practices.
Tragically, both Mustapha Bunduka and his apprentice Sorie Sesay lost their lives inside the collapsed building, with their bodies being recovered in the late hours of the night during the rescue efforts.
