A high-profile delegation from ECOWAS is currently in Freetown to assess the progress in implementing the National Unity Agreement. The delegation will review the advancements made in putting into action the Agreement for National Unity and the steps taken regarding the recommendations from the Tripartite Committee’s Report.
According to a statement from the ECOWAS Commission, President Omar Alieu Touray has collaborated with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simão, in dispatching a Joint Monitoring Mission to Sierra Leone from October 15 to 18, 2024. This mission focuses on overseeing the implementation of the Agreement for National Unity signed between the Government of Sierra Leone and the All People’s Congress (APC) party on October 18, 2023.
Led by Leonardo Santos Simão and Fatoumata Jallow-Tambajang, former Vice President of The Gambia, the mission includes experts from various organizations such as the Commonwealth and Sierra Leone’s Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC).
The delegation will engage with key stakeholders in Sierra Leone, including government officials, political party leaders, members of parliament, the judiciary, security agencies, electoral and political party registration commissions, and civil society organizations. Discussions will focus on the progress in implementing the Unity Agreement and measures taken in response to the Tripartite Committee’s recommendations. Additionally, the mission will meet with President Julius Maada Bio to discuss matters of importance.
As the International Moral Guarantors of the Agreement, the mission encourages all political actors, stakeholders, and citizens to uphold unity, peace, and stability in the country.
