In the bustling streets of Sierra Leone, a dark shadow looms over the youth population as the deadly grip of an addictive substance known as kush tightens its hold. The abuse of this drug has already claimed the lives of several young individuals, leaving a trail of destruction and despair in its wake.
At just 18 years old, a young boy from the Leicester Road community shared his harrowing tale of addiction to kush. Once a promising student, his life took a dark turn as the drug took over, leading to his eventual drop out of school and descent into the streets. Describing the temporary relief and escape he feels after smoking kush, he also bared the painful truth of the toll it has taken on him – from physical injuries to a loss of self-esteem that leaves him feeling trapped in a vicious cycle of dependency.
Despite the evident harm and devastation caused by kush, the demand for the substance remains strong among the youth. Another 19-year-old, Sulaman Tarawallie, spoke candidly about his struggles with addiction, revealing the desperate measures he has resorted to to feed his habit. His dependency on Kush has driven him to steal from others, highlighting the destructive impact this drug has on the moral fabric of society.
Both young men called upon the government to take decisive action to stem the tide of kush importation into Sierra Leone. They recognized that without access to the drug, its allure and destructive power would wane, offering a glimmer of hope for those ensnared in its clutches. They understood that breaking free from the chains of addiction was the only way to reclaim their lives, dreams, and aspirations for a brighter future.
As the voices of these young individuals echo the urgent need for intervention, it is clear that the negative impact of kush on the youth of Sierra Leone cannot be ignored. With lives at stake and futures hanging in the balance, the call for action grows louder, urging authorities to address this pressing issue before more promising lives are lost to the vicious cycle of addiction and despair.
