In a surprising turn of events, the newly appointed Defence Minister of Liberia, Rtd. Prince Charles Johnson resigned three days after being sworn in. Last week, the Liberian Senate approved Johnson’s nomination by President Joseph Boakai. However, his resignation comes in response to protests by military officers’ spouses, who expressed dissatisfaction with the living conditions and various issues within the Edward Beyan Kesselly Barracks.
The protestors blocked streets and demanded Johnson’s resignation, accusing him of being complicit in their grievances. President Boakai, in an attempt to address the concerns of the protestors, cancelled the upcoming Armed Forces Day celebration and met with the protest leaders. Despite these measures, the women continued with their protest.
A press release from the Executive Mansion confirmed Johnson’s resignation. President Boakai, in accepting the resignation, expressed gratitude for Johnson’s service and described him as a patriot. It is noteworthy that Johnson had previously served as Defense Minister under Liberia’s first female President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
The Executive Mansion says new president Boakai will address the nation tonight.
