The current ECOWAS Chairman, Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, has announced his intention to host an ECOWAS Economic Summit led by the private sector.
President Bio stated that Africa has a population of 1.4 billion, with ECOWAS alone accounting for 470 million. He emphasized that the African market is significant enough to generate wealth for its citizens.
President Bio spoke on a panel in Davos, Switzerland, at The 56th Annual Meeting of The World Economic Forum, addressing the topic: “How Can Africa Prosper in the New Economy?” Other speakers included Rachel Glennerster, Raj Kumar, Wamkele Keabetswe Mene, and Johann Jurie Strydom.
During his submission, President Bio expressed that instead of using its borders to create economic wealth for its people, Africa is using them to create separation. He outlined his plans to bring together private sector businesses in the region to discuss and identify practical steps on how to conduct business and facilitate the movement of money and services.
