Sierra Leone’s Electoral Chief Calls on Parties to Condemn Supporters’ Conduct Ahead of Elections

Mohamed Konneh, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone, has appealed to political parties and civil society to condemn the actions of their supporters.

Konneh spoke emotionally at a recent meeting of stakeholders, saying that no amount of abusive language or threats will lead him to act outside of the law. He called for political parties and civil society to denounce the actions of their supporters, noting that despite previous peace accords and memorandums of understanding, some parties’ supporters are continuing to undermine the country’s stability.

The upcoming election, scheduled for June 24th, has 13 candidates for the presidency, but the race is widely seen as being between two major parties: the ruling Sierra Leone Peoples Party and the opposition All People’s Congress.
