The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has swiftly responded to a request made by the All Peoples Congress party (APC) regarding a peaceful procession. In an attempt to maintain order and minimize potential disturbances, the SLP has scheduled a meeting with APC party leaders on Monday 19th June, 2023.
However, despite their commitment to facilitating a peaceful march, the SLP expressed their dissatisfaction with the short notice provided by the APC. Citing the importance of adequate planning, the police have pointed out the need for at least 72 hours notice. This timeframe would allow the SLP to make appropriate arrangements to ensure the safety and security of all participants and the general public.
Meanwhile, the APC has planned to hold a peaceful procession towards the offices of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL). Their aim is to submit a position paper outlining their concerns and demands. This decision comes as a direct response to an ultimatum issued by the APC’s presidential candidate, Dr. Samura Kamara. Kamara has urged the ECSL commissioners to resign, expressing his dissatisfaction with their handling of the electoral process.
The procession if granted is expected to be spearheaded by Dr. Samura Kamara himself and will be joined by other high-ranking APC officials as well as their loyal supporters. The APC party hopes that their peaceful demonstration will draw attention to their grievances and prompt the necessary actions to address them.
Given the significance of this event, the Sierra Leone Police will be working closely with the APC party leaders to ensure a safe and orderly procession. They will collaborate on developing a well-coordinated plan to manage traffic, crowd control, and any potential issues that may arise.
The SLP says they are committed to upholding the democratic rights of citizens, including their freedom of assembly and expression. However, they also emphasize the need for responsible and organized demonstrations to safeguard the rights of all individuals involved.
The upcoming meeting between the Sierra Leone Police and the APC party leaders will serve as a platform for dialogue. Both parties will have the opportunity to discuss the logistics, expectations, and any concerns or specific requirements to guarantee a successful and peaceful demonstration.
It remains to be seen how the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone will respond to the APC’s demands and if any substantial changes will be made. The outcome of these negotiations and the events that unfold during the procession will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the political landscape of Sierra Leone.
