Ghanaians are resorting to traditional methods to cope with internet disruptions caused by damage to undersea cables. The interruptions have affected individuals and businesses nationwide, leading to communication challenges and a return to old-fashioned ways of doing things. Tracy Smith, a resident of Accra, shared her harrowing experience with our EyeWitnessNews Ghana reporter when she was unable to reach her family in Kumasi due to network issues. Concerned about her mother’s illness, she had to make an emergency trip to Kumasi on the same day to be by her side.
The damage to undersea cables in Ghana has resulted in internet disruptions, impacting the operations of major internet service providers. While MTN had partial functionality, Telecel experienced a complete outage. Meanwhile, Airtel Tigo continued to offer reliable internet services to its users.
The disruption has had a significant impact, particularly on individuals who rely on internet connectivity for staying in touch with loved ones and accessing essential information. Telecel users faced additional challenges due to the network being completely non-functional for calls or data services. Although MTN and Telecel had informed their customers in advance about potential disruptions, the abrupt loss of connectivity left many feeling frustrated and struggling to manage their daily tasks.
Online businesses in Ghana were also affected by the internet disruption, with slow or unreliable connections hampering their operations and revenue generation. Communication challenges emerged, making it difficult for businesses to collaborate effectively and provide seamless customer service.
The cause of the undersea cable damage is currently under investigation, highlighting the vulnerability of Ghana’s internet infrastructure and emphasizing the need for improved network resilience and redundancy. Efforts are underway to repair the cables and restore full connectivity promptly.
