The Gambia will host the prestigious West Africa Social Media Awards (WASMA) in 2025. Known as the smiling coast of West Africa, this tiny country will welcome social media influencers for this year’s event.
The West Africa Social Media Awards, originally known as the Salone Social Media Awards, were founded to recognize and honour individuals and institutions positively utilizing social media. Founder Murtala Mohamed Kamara believes that social media is a powerful tool that can be used for good, inspiring others to make a positive impact with their online presence.
Issa Kamara, the current CEO of the West African Social Media Awards, expressed gratitude for the support received in The Gambia. He is currently in the country to present awards and engage with Gambian authorities in preparation for the 2025 WASMA ceremony.
Momodu Sabally, Special Adviser to the President of The Gambia and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 WASMA, emphasized the positive influence of social media on young people in Africa and globally. Sabally commended the WASMA team for recognizing and rewarding those who utilize social media for positive purposes and expressed excitement for The Gambia hosting the 2025 awards.
Mustapha N’jie, chairman of TAF Africa, was also honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The inaugural Salone Social Media Awards occurred in October 2018 at the Miatta Conference Center. The 2024 West Africa Social Media Awards were held in Holland, while the 2025 edition will occur in The Gambia.
