Sierra Leone took on the role of President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on 1st August 2024. The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Sierra Leone to the United Nations will serve as the UNSC President for August 2024, marking the country’s third time in this prestigious position.
As the holder of the Presidency, Sierra Leone’s Representative becomes the face and spokesperson of the UNSC, able to encourage parties in conflicts to show restraint. This role involves representing the Security Council before other United Nations bodies and member states.
The UNSC Presidency rotates monthly, with only two African nations holding the position in 2024. Previously, Mozambique held the Presidency in May 2024, with Sierra Leone assuming the role in August.
Ambassador Kanu is expected as President of the UNSC to navigate the myriad global crises unfolding, such as the Israel-Palestine conflict, the Sudan war, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and the Democratic Republic of Congo crises.
I have followed Ambassador Kanu at the United Nations well before he assumed the UNSC presidency. I’m impressed with his work.
Known for his competence and broad international knowledge, Ambassador Kanu is dedicated to enhancing efficiency, transparency, and inclusivity during Sierra Leone’s Presidency.
In his recent press conference at the United Nations, Ambassador Kanu outlined the agenda for August 2024, focusing on fostering cooperation, maintaining diplomatic standards, and promoting gender perspectives within UNSC meetings. His adept handling of questions on critical issues like the Israel-Palestine conflict and journalist safety demonstrates his capabilities on the international stage.
It’s important to recognize and celebrate good work. I have not talked directly to Amb Kanu, and it is evident that I am not seeking any favor with this endorsement. People should be commended while they are still alive, not when they are dead.
We must remember that Ambassador Kanu does not represent the APC or SLPP, but the Green, White and Blue.
We should always remember that our man at the UNSC is capable of representing the Land That We Love at the UNSC when major international crises like the Isreal-Palestine conflict, the Russian-Ukraine war or the DRC come up.
