Dear Editor,
This week, Peace Corps proudly celebrates its 65th anniversary worldwide and 64 years of partnership and service in Sierra Leone. Since 1962, almost 4,000 Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) have worked in nearly every district of this great country, focusing especially on literacy, science, math, agriculture, and maternal and child health. Side by side with communities, our Volunteers have supported teachers, farmers, strengthened schools, and promoted healthier futures for families and children.
America sends its best to Sierra Leone: our inspired youth. Peace Corps Volunteers have lived and worked in hundreds of communities throughout Sierra Leone. In partnership with their communities, Volunteers have rehabilitated dozens of facilities including Community Health Units (CHUs), libraries, and educational buildings. Many have built lifelong friendships, and some have even married Sierra Leoneans, creating families that bridge our two nations. America is stronger due to our partnership, building bridges between families, businesses, and cultures in our two countries.
Our Volunteers have learned the culture and languages of Salone from the people themselves — from villagers, women and youth leaders, and paramount chiefs — gaining wisdom, humility, and perspective. They return home to America stronger, better, and wiser individuals, carrying with them a deep respect and affection for Sierra Leone and its people.
We are deeply grateful for the collaboration with the Government of Sierra Leone, particularly the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the Ministry of Health and Sanitation for their steadfast partnership and leadership. Most of all, we thank the people of Salone for their generosity, resilience, and trust. Together, we continue to strengthen the enduring bonds between our two countries.
We remain honored to serve and to build on this remarkable legacy of friendship.
