Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged ¥50 million in economic and technical assistance, Y20 million in debt cancellation, and 1500 tons of food aid for Sierra Leone during President Julius Maada Bio’s recent five-day state visit to China.
Sierra Leone currently owes China $78 million in debt, representing 2.5% of its total public debt, as per data from the International Monetary Fund.
During the visit, President Xi Jinping highlighted the longstanding cooperation between Sierra Leone and China, offering support for President Bio’s key development priorities. He commended President Bio for his leadership within the African Union and pledged China’s backing for Africa’s stance on Security Council reform.
President Bio expressed appreciation for China’s assistance and reaffirmed Sierra Leone’s commitment to the one-China principle, as well as its support for China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The relationship between Sierra Leone and China dates back to 1971 and has seen significant investment from Chinese companies, notably in the metals sector. Premier LI Qiang also emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation and public service during his meeting with President Bio.
Additionally, a recent agreement between the Sierra Leone Government and China Road and Bridge Corporation signals a major infrastructure project to construct an 8-km bridge connecting Freetown to Lungi, with an estimated cost of $1.5 billion.
Overall, the visit is expected to enhance bilateral relations and deepen the partnership between Sierra Leone and China, further solidifying their longstanding ties.
