On June 5, 2023, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) joined forces with the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) and the Independent Media Commission (IMC) to unveil the SLAJ Media Manifesto 2023, aimed at promoting an inclusive and empowered media in Sierra Leone. According to SLAJ president Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, the document seeks to build on the gains of the past five years and establish a collective vision for the future of journalism in the country.
Speaking at the launch, Minister of Information and Communications, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, lauded the government’s efforts to create a safe environment for media practitioners, citing the repeal of part five of the Criminal Libel Law, the IMC Code, and Sierra Leone’s participation in the Global Media Freedom Coalition.
The manifesto prioritizes media freedom, journalist safety and security, access to information, and capacity building. As the country approaches polling day, the manifesto serves as a guide for all stakeholders to ensure responsible use of the media and promote inclusivity in Sierra Leone’s media landscape.
