Former President Ernest Bai Koroma of Sierra Leone has been charged with treason for his alleged involvement in a failed coup attempt on November 26th. Koroma appeared in court in Freetown before Magistrate Santigie Bangura of Court No. 2. The charges against him include four counts of treason, misprision of treason, and two counts of harboring.
The Economic Commission of West African States (ECOWAS) President, Omar Toure, had requested that Koroma be relocated to Abuja, Nigeria, but the government of Sierra Leone declined this request. Koroma had served as president from 2007 until he handed power over to current President Julius Maada Bio in 2018 after the All People’s Congress Party won the elections.
