Sierra Leone’s former President, Ernest Bai Koroma, has been granted permission by a court in Freetown to travel to Nigeria for medical reasons. The bail conditions have been reviewed by Hon Justice S.O Taylor, although specific details have not been disclosed.
Koroma who is facing four counts of coup allegations appeared in court on January 3rd. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) President Omar Alieu Touray had previously requested that the Sierra Leone government allow Koroma to relocate to Nigeria, but the request was denied. Other individuals, including bodyguards and a former minister from Koroma’s regime, are also on trial for the November 26 coup attempts.
Koroma’s legal team has expressed shock at the allegations, stating that he was interrogated by the police for over 40 hours with no substantial evidence found against him.
