Yvonne Aki-Sawyer of the All Peoples Congress (APC) was declared winner of the Freetown City Mayoral election, defeating Mohamed Gento Kamara of the Sierra Leone Peoples Party. She won with 51 percent of valid votes. This will be Aki-Sawyer’s second term as Mayor, having served in the position for the past five years
In a show of transparency, Aki-Sawyer expressed her intention to release 85 percent of the signed and stamped Results and Reconciliation Forms (RRFs) from polling centers in the Western Urban District. These RRFs indicate that Aki-Sawyer received 66 percent of the valid votes cast in the Western Area Urban.
However, despite her win, it remains uncertain whether Aki-Sawyer will be able to assume her position as Mayor. Her party, the All People’s Congress (APC), has declared their nonparticipation in all levels of governance. This poses a challenge for Aki-Sawyer in taking office and carrying out her duties as Mayor.
The announcement of the election results was made by the Chief Electoral Commissioner of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Mohamed Konneh, on July 1, 2023.
