Sierra Leone’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations has condemned Israel’s bombing in Doha, Qatar. Ambassador Michael Imran Kanu joined world leaders at an emergency United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting in New York condemning Israel.
Thursday’s meeting was convened following the attacks by Israel in Doha, killing some Hamas officials and a Qatari. The Qatari Prime Minister, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, flew into New York to attend the meetings.
Ambassador Kanu, speaking at the UNSC as a Non-Permanent member, said: “An assault on the territory of a mediator is not only a violation of its sovereignty but also a direct strike on the very architecture of diplomacy.”
He echoed the words of the United Nations Secretary-General, stating that all parties should work towards a permanent ceasefire and not undermine it.
Ambassador Kanu said: “Sierra Leone is gravely alarmed by the flagrant breach of international law. We strongly condemn Israel’s attacks in Doha.” He also commended the restraints demonstrated by the state of Qatar while calling for Qatar’s full sovereignty to be respected.
Ambassador Kanu said: “Beyond the violation of sovereignty, Sierra Leone is gravely disturbed by the targeted assassination of individuals who should be considered protected persons under international law, particularly under international humanitarian law.” He pointed out the Geneva Convention that condemned the targeting of civilians and negotiators.
He also expressed concerns over the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and the West Bank. He condemned the 8th September attacks by gunmen in Tel Aviv and called for an immediate ceasefire and the delivery of aid to Gaza. He said the council must demand a ceasefire and that the world is looking up to this council for leadership.
The Qatari Prime Minister also condemned Israel’s attack on Doha. Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani said their role as mediators is appreciated worldwide. He described the Israeli ministers as arrogant and stated that Israel is trying to undermine any prospect of peace. He said Israel doesn’t care about the hostages.
Sierra Leone has made its position very clear that only a two-state solution will solve the problem between Israel and Palestine.
