In an election held on the first day of the sitting of the Liberia House of Representatives, Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa of Grand Kru County District 2 has been elected as the new Speaker. Koffa, a member of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), secured 36 out of 67 votes, defeating his opponent Richard Nagbe Koon of the Unity Party.
The election was met with excitement from party members, with celebrations taking place. In his address to colleagues, Speaker Koffa emphasized the need to prioritize the interests of the Liberian people and expressed his commitment to consulting them regarding the establishment of a war and economic crimes court.
Koffa had previously served as Deputy Speaker since 2019 before being elected as Speaker. Lofa County District One Representative Thomas Fallah was elected as Deputy Speaker, defeating his opponent Musa Haasan Bility of Nimba County District seven. The elections for other positions, such as Clark, Deputy Chief Clark, and Sargent-at-arms, have been postponed to January 16. With these new appointments, the leadership of the House of Representatives has transitioned from the outgoing government to the newly elected officials.
