This year, 87 heads of state, 3 vice presidents, 2 crown princes, 45 heads of government, eight deputy heads of government, 45 ministers, and four lower-ranking delegation heads will address the General Assembly. Leaders are limited to 15 minutes per speech.
UNGA kicks off with the Summit of the Future on the 22nd and 23rd of September 2024. The debate will begin on September 24 with Brazil being the first speaker followed by the USA and Turkey. Among those speaking on September 24 will be Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio.
Analysts predict President Bio will argue for a permanent seat for Africa on the UN Security Council, highlight his Government achievements and call for de-escalation in the Israel-Palestine-Lebanon conflict.
UN General Assembly comes at a time of mounting tension between Israel, Palestine, and Lebanon. The Israeli shelling on Monday killed nearly 400 people in Lebanon. The wars in the Middle East, the war in the Sudan, and the Russia-Ukraine war will dominate the discussion.
