The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) expresses deep sorrow and distress regarding the tragic killing of Samuel Brima Mattia, a former reporter with VOPAD Radio 96.5 FM and an active member of the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL).
Latest reports indicate that Samuel’s death occurred under unclear and brutal circumstances on Thursday, 16 January 2025, in Waterloo. SLAJ unequivocally condemns any form of violence against journalists and emphasizes the necessity of protecting press freedom and the lives of those who diligently work to inform and educate the public.
We urge the Sierra Leone Police to undertake a comprehensive and prompt investigation into the events surrounding Samuel’s death. It is essential that the individuals responsible for this act are held accountable, and that such a horrific crime does not go unpunished.
As we grieve the loss of our colleague, SLAJ stands in solidarity with SWASAL, Samuel’s family, and all those impacted by this tragic incident. We extend our heartfelt condolences and wish for comfort and strength during this challenging period.
SLAJ is in touch with the CID Waterloo Division who are investigating the matter, and we remain committed to advocating for the safety and protection of journalists throughout the nation.
